Travel inspiration
Albania packs an Ionian coastline, Ottoman-era towns, high mountain trails, and a fast-moving capital into a compact trip. Pair the Riviera with Berat or Gjirokastër, then leave time for Tirana and the Albanian Alps.
Build the journey around the places travellers actually look for: coast or lakes, culture, nature, nightlife, local food, and the right season.
Best beach escape
01Base yourself around Dhërmi or Himara for clear Ionian water, pebble coves, sunset restaurants, and summer beach bars.
Best for culture
02Walk hillside Ottoman quarters, stone lanes, castles, and traditional houses in two of the country’s most characterful historic cities.
Best nature trip
03The Albanian Alps are the place for dramatic valleys, guesthouse stays, waterfalls, and the celebrated Theth-to-Valbona hike.
Best nightlife
04Blloku concentrates cocktail bars, live music, restaurants, and late-night energy; the Riviera adds seasonal parties in summer.
Best time to visit
May to June and September balance warm coast days with lighter crowds. July and August bring the liveliest beach season; late spring to early autumn suits mountain hiking.
Local food to try
Try byrek, tavë kosi, qofte, grilled vegetables, mountain cheeses, and fresh seafood along the coast.
Practical travel tip
Short distances can take longer on mountain and coastal roads. Plan key bus legs first, keep some time flexible, and carry cash for smaller guesthouses and local services.
Where to go
Best for · Food, nightlife, and contemporary culture
Start around Skanderbeg Square, Bunk’Art, the New Bazaar, and the museums, then spend the evening in Blloku or at the restaurants and bars near the centre. Dajti mountain is an easy half-day escape when the weather is clear.
Best for · Historic houses and a slower pace
The white Ottoman houses of Mangalem rise beneath a still-inhabited castle. Walk both sides of the Osum River, visit the Onufri icon museum, and stay after day-trippers leave for a quieter evening in the old quarters.
Best for · Stone architecture and southern history
Climb through steep cobbled lanes to the fortress, enter one of the preserved tower houses, and use the town as a base for the Blue Eye spring, Antigonea, or onward travel toward the Riviera.
Best for · Beaches, boat trips, and summer evenings
Himarë is a practical coast base with town beaches, restaurants, and access to Livadhi, Jale, Porto Palermo, Qeparo, and Dhërmi. A few nights let you mix swimming with old villages and coastal viewpoints.
Best for · Mountain scenery and village stays
Choose Theth for waterfalls and accessible valley walks, or link Theth and Valbona with the high pass hike. The journey is part of the experience and usually requires a combination of road transport, ferry, and local transfers.
First-trip itinerary
Days 1–2
Use one full day for central Tirana, Bunk’Art or the House of Leaves, the New Bazaar, and Blloku. On the second day, continue to Berat and sleep inside or close to the old quarters.
Days 3–5
Travel south through Gjirokastër, then cross toward Himarë. Give the coast at least two nights so the itinerary includes a beach day, a boat trip or cove, and an evening in a Riviera town.
Days 6–9
Stay south for Butrint, Ksamil, and more Riviera time, or return north and commit several days to Shkodër, Theth, and Valbona. Trying to combine both extremes too quickly creates long transfer days.

The departure list is generated from active operator schedules. A route disappears automatically when it is no longer bookable or fully priced.
Seven to ten days is a useful first trip. Five days can cover Tirana, one historic town, and a short coast stay; two weeks allows both the Riviera and northern mountains without turning the holiday into continuous transit.
Tirana and other cities can have several informal bus departure points rather than one universal terminal. Confirm the exact landmark or station with the operator. Reserve Riviera rooms and key north–south transfers early for July and August, especially around weekends and festivals. Mountain guesthouses and smaller transport providers may prefer cash. Confirm luggage, pickup, hiking conditions, and return arrangements before leaving the valley.
